ifs School of Finance Diploma for Financial Advisers (DipFA)®


The ifs School of Finance's Diploma for Financial Advisers (DipFA) is a qualification specifically designed for financial advisers who wish to enhance their prospects by demonstrating a higher level of knowledge and skills. The DipFA is an FSA-approved QCF Level 4 qualification.

The DipFA comprises 2 core units, with three separate assessments, as follows:

    Unit 1 – Financial Services, Regulations and Ethics (FSRE) – multi-choice exam

    Unit 2 – Part 1 – Advanced Financial Advice (AFA) – written coursework assignment

    Unit 2 – Part 2 – Advanced Financial Advice (AFA) – written exam based on a fact-find
Douglas James provides training support for each of these assessments, as follows:

    Unit 1 – FSRE – 5-day course (for those attending our course at the ifs London Office, there is the option of taking the exam at the training centre on the last day of the course)

    Unit 2 – Part 1 – 2 day course

    Unit 2 – Part 2 – 3 day course

CII Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning

The Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning covers the following 6 required subject areas identified by the Financial Services Authority and Financial Services Skills Council :

    R01 – Financial services, regulation and ethics
    R02 – Investment principles and risk
    R03 – Personal taxation
    R04 – Pension and retirement planning
    R05 – Financial protection
    R06 – Financial planning practice
To complete the Diploma, you will need to pass all 6 units.

Credits and level

    R01 – 20 Diploma Credits – 65% pass mark
    R02 – 20 Diploma Credits – 65% pass mark
    R03 – 10 Diploma Credits – 65% pass mark
    R04 – 10 Diploma Credits – 65% pass mark
    R05 - 10 Certificate Credits – 70% pass mark
    R06 – 30 Diploma Credits – 55% pass mark

The Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning comprises 5 multi-choice assessments (R01-5) with results released immediately on completion. R06 is a written paper and results are released approximately 4 weeks after the exam.

This qualification, from the CII, carries OFQUAL Level 4 accreditation and on completion you will be eligible to use the designation DipPFS.

For the Diploma to be awarded, you must hold one of the following qualifications :

    • Financial Planning Certificate - FPC

    • Certificate for Financial Advisers - CeFA®

    • Certificate in Financial Planning - CFP - (Units 1-5)
Completion requirements
    • You must accumulate a total of 140 credits to complete the Diploma, of which 80 credits must be at Diploma level.

    • The remaining 60 credits must come from any of the examinations offered within the CII financial services framework at Certificate and Diploma level, or from comparable qualifications offered by other awarding bodies.

    J01 - Personal Tax
    J02 - Trusts
    J03 - The tax and legal aspects of business
    J04 - Pension Funding Options
    J05 - Pension Income Options
    J06 - Investment principles, markets and environment
    J07 - Supervision in a regulated environment
    JO8 - Personal Financial Planning ( 30 credits )
